NORWAY AND ITS ALUMINIUM INDUSTRY
INVESTMENT IN VENEZUELA ???
Norway is a country that is considered one of the most
notable world references in terms of the quality of life enjoyed by its
inhabitants. In fact, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, which is a
very good indicator of the standard of living, in 2016 was of the order of
72,000 USD, ranking it number 6 in the ranking of 196 countries in the ranking
of GDP per capita.
These GDP values lead to the average salary of its inhabitants being among the highest in the world, with the average salary in the order of USD 69,000 per year. As for the Human Development Index or HDI, which is prepared by the United Nations to measure the progress of a country and which ultimately shows us the standard of living of its inhabitants, it indicates that the Norwegians are the ones with the best quality of life in the world.
An important aspect for these achievements is the establishment and execution of government policies and strategies, which for example lead to Norway being in sixth place out of the 190 countries that make up the Doing Business ranking, which classifies countries according to the ease they offer to do business, in addition to an emphasis on investment in education, and severe control of corruption.
These issues of Norwegian culture have been explained in Venezuela by Dr. Juan Guzmán, who studied PhD at the University of Trondheim, today Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU, and who has maintained close relationships with colleagues in Norway for over thirty years.

Other determining variables for these results are its marked developments in the oil industry, and a very efficient exploitation of its hydroelectric resources for the establishment of industrial parks. At this level we will remind the reader that, like Norway, Venezuela has huge oil reserves and vast hydroelectric resources.
As part of the State's policies and strategies in Norway, its potential to produce energy has been used for the development of a very important aluminium industry. In fact, Norway is the largest primary aluminium producer in Western Europe, exporting between 80 to 90% of its production.
Norsk Hydro is the largest aluminium company in Norway. In this article we will review in brief detail relevant aspects about Norsk Hydro, but not before recalling that the aluminium industry in Venezuela has experience of commercial and technological relations with Norway, since Line V of aluminium production of the company CVG Venalum was built with Norwegian technology, as well as the technological improvements of its other four production lines, and the execution of specialized training programs for Venezuelan technicians at its facilities in Norway.
Following the previous comment, it is important to
highlight the importance for our country Venezuela of being able to attract
foreign investment for the development of productive projects, being our comparative
advantages for the aluminium industry, among others: i) abundant hydroelectric potential; ii) vast reserves of bauxite and natural gas; iii) an existing aluminium industrial park; iv) managerial and
technical personnel with specialized training: tools that we must use.
The company Norsk Hydro ASA manages all sectors of the
aluminium production chain, from bauxite, alumina, power generation, primary aluminium
production, rolling, extrusion, and also recycling. The company has just over
35,000 employees, and has a presence in more than 40 countries.
Returning to our interest in attracting investments for our country Venezuela, we find the fact of significant investments made by Norsk Hydro in our neighbouring Brazil, which include one of the largest bauxite mines in the world, the largest alumina refinery worldwide, and other companies as described below.
In addition to this important investment in Brazil,
Norsk Hydro has also considered making investments in Trinidad and Tobago, for
the construction of plants for the production of aluminium, this taking advantage
of the comparative advantages offered by Trinidad and Tobago not only for its natural
gas industry, but also by investor incentives as part of Trinidad and Tobago's
government policies.
The initiative included the construction of a thermoelectric plant based on the use of natural gas, and an aluminium smelter with a capacity of more than 475,000 tons per year, that is, more than CVG Venalum's production capacity of the order of 435,000 tons per year. The area selected for construction is located in the south of the Point Lisas’s industrial area.
CONCLUSIONS.-
As we have shared in several articles on this blog, aluminium is a powerful tool for development and well-being for countries that take the exploitation of this industry seriously.
That said, we have no doubts that: i) considering the comparative advantages to produce aluminium that our country Venezuela possesses; ii) our successful experiences with Norway in the Industrial field as well as in our Diplomatic relations; iii) and the need of the world market to increase aluminium production: We can join forces with companies like Norsk Hydro and work together on mutually beneficial projects, for which we are at your entire disposal for such purposes.
