GALTCO AN INDUSTRIAL MILESTONE FOR COLOMBIA
GALTCO AN INDUSTRIAL MILESTONE FOR COLOMBIA
The GALTCO Project in Colombia marks a turning
point in the country's industrial history. In a context where Colombia has
traditionally depended on exports of oil, coal and agricultural products,
economic diversification has become an imperative need. With an electrical
system whose generation is based mostly on renewable energy, mainly
hydroelectric, and expanding towards solar and wind energy, Colombia is well
positioned to meet the growing global demand for low-carbon products.
GALTCO, the first aluminium smelter in Colombia, not only represents a technological breakthrough, but also a
significant push towards the country's reindustrialisation and economic
diversification. This project has the full support of Colombian Government
institutions and national companies, as well as international interest. The
construction of GALTCO will be a milestone in Colombia's industrial
history, contributing to the country's sustainable development goals and
enhancing its global reputation.
GALTCO project stands
out for its commitment to social responsibility and economic development.
Through a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility program and a Social
and Economic Impact Study, GALTCO seeks to balance economic development
with environmental protection and social well-being. The plant will use an
optimized energy mix, resulting in a carbon footprint of only 5 tons of CO2
per ton of aluminium produced, making it one of the cleanest in the world.
GALTCO 's strategic
location in Tolú, Sucre, offers significant logistical advantages. The
proximity to the COMPAS port, with capacity to handle approximately two
and a half million tons of goods per year, and its operational draft of 14
meters, facilitate the entry of ships of up to 60,000 tons. In addition, the
region has excellent solar radiation, allowing the generation of 100% clean
electricity through a photovoltaic park built by Electricité de France (EDF).
The economic impact of GALTCO will be
significant, with the creation of around 15,000 jobs during the construction
and operation phases. The availability of locally produced aluminium will
foster the development of downstream industries, positioning Colombia as an
exporter of primary aluminium and derived products. Proximity to important
markets such as the United States offers logistical advantages and access to a
broad market, while the growing middle class in Colombia drives a robust
domestic market.
In summary, the GALTCO Project will not only
boost economic growth and job creation in Colombia, but will also
position the country as a leader in sustainable and responsible aluminium
production globally. This project represents a transformative opportunity for Colombia,
leveraging its natural resources, green energy infrastructure and
strategic location to achieve sustainable and prosperous industrial
development.
